The Baker McKenzie Healthcare & Life Science Industry Group presented the first of a series of short webinars sharing legal industry insights and providing practical guidance in the context of today’s evolving world. On 17-18 November 2020, the session focused on a region-by-region view of the evolving compulsory licensing regimes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The 60-minute session featured a region-by-region look at the evolving compulsory licensing regimes and how they are being shaped by the pandemic. With the mounting global pressure to secure vaccines in development and drugs showing promise as possible COVID-19 treatments, our speakers shared practical insights and updates on the compulsory licensing trends and regulations likely to affect companies across Asia Pacific; Europe, the Middle East and Africa; Latin America*; and North America.

Kamleh Nicola is a partner in Baker McKenzie's Toronto office and a member of the North America Healthcare Steering Committee. A litigator whose practice is primarily in intellectual property and dispute resolution, Kamleh has successfully navigated cases through to resolution in a manner that maximizes benefits to her clients. She can efficiently manage the complexities of litigation without losing sight of the overall case strategy, especially where the case is litigated in multiple jurisdictions. In those instances, Kamleh works collaboratively with counsel and client contacts in those jurisdictions to ensure consistency in strategic approach. Kamleh also assists life science and medical device companies to navigate the complexities of the health regulatory regime and advises corporate directors and senior management on various aspects of governance and compliance. She has been recognized in Legal Media Group's 2013 to 2020 Guides to the World's Leading Women in Business Law and the World's Leading Patent Practitioners, as well as Who's Who Legal (Patents) and IAM Patent 1000 . Kamleh is an active member of the Firm's North American Diversity and Inclusion Committee and Anti-Racism Taskforce.


Hiroshi Sheraton's practice covers all aspects of intellectual property law with a particular emphasis on contentious patent and trade mark matters and life sciences. Much of his work is cross-border in nature. He regularly co-ordinates pan-European and global IP litigation and advises clients on international IP strategies for patent litigation and brand protection. He represents clients in the UKIPO, EPO, OHIM, the English Courts and the CJEU. He has experience of IP matters across Europe and has litigated IP cases in Germany, France, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Ireland, Northern Ireland and Luxembourg, the USA and Asia Pacific. Although he has a first degree in biochemistry and molecular biology, he covers all areas of technology from pharmaceuticals/biotech products and agrochemicals to electronics and software.


Marcela Trigo is a partner in Trench Rossi Watanabe in the Intellectual Property and Information Technology Group and has over 10 years of experience in complex litigation, before state and federal courts in Brazil, having acted in several leading cases in the area of Industrial Property. Her practice focus, Acts primarily representing clients in legal disputes involving patents, trade secrets, data package exclusivity, unfair competition and regulatory compliance, in particular in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and telecommunications fields.


Elisabeth White is a partner in Baker McKenzie's Sydney office. Elisabeth has over 15 years' experience as an intellectual property and regulatory advisor, focusing upon IP protection and enforcement with a particular emphasis on regulated industries and related disputes. Elisabeth is described in Asia Pacific Legal 500 as providing “decisive expert opinion and a pragmatic approach”. She has been featured in Best Lawyers - Intellectual Property listed annually since 2013.
