Baker McKenzie’s VAT/Indirect Tax Practice presented “VAT Around the World Pt. 2” on 2 December 2020. This was the seventh presentation in the International VAT Conference Webinar Series, a global webinar series designed for VAT specialists from all industry sectors that aims to discuss the latest developing trends and hot topics in the VAT/goods and services tax (GST) and customs arena.


The Baker McKenzie VAT/Indirect Tax Practice provided an annual review of key VAT developments outside of Europe and provide a bird’s eye view of what is going on in Latin America*, North America, and Asia-Pacific as well as discuss which indirect tax developments have occurred or will occur.

Yvonne Beh is a partner in the Tax Practice Group of Wong & Partners. She has been advising on Malaysian tax laws and legal issues relating to corporate and commercial matters in Malaysia for more than 10 years. Lindsay M. LaCava is a partner of the Firm’s Tax Practice Group in New York and advises individual and business clients on a full range of state and local tax issues. She was named a “Rising Star” in Tax Law in 2015 by Law360, and was selected by Super Lawyers as a New York-Metro "Rising Star" for Tax in 2013-2015. Prior to joining Baker McKenzie, Ms. LaCava was a partner in the state and local tax group of an international law firm. In addition, she previously worked at a Big Four accounting firm, where her practice focused exclusively on state and local tax. Ms. LaCava speaks on a variety of state tax topics at events around the country and also frequently writes about state and local tax issues.

Jan Snel is a partner in Baker McKenzie's Tax Practice Group in Amsterdam. He joined the Firm in 1995. In 2000 and 2001, he worked in the Palo Alto office where he focused on assisting US companies (of which many are high tech or e-commerce companies) in dealing with VAT and customs issues particularly in multinational contexts. He became a partner in the Amsterdam office in 2003. Jan is a frequent speaker on EU VAT and Customs issues at international tax planning programs, including the Tax Executives Institute and the Chicago Tax Club.

Prior to joining the Firm in 2018, Bryan was a lawyer with a boutique tax law firm in Toronto, providing advice on indirect tax and trade matters in both planning and dispute resolution contexts. He started his career as an articling student and associate at a national law firm.
