In brief
On 22 February 2022, the Chamber of Deputies approved the bill for the conversion into law of decree-law No. 228/2021, which shall now be discussed by the Senate for its final approval by 28 February 2022.
The bill provides for several amendments to the current text of decree-law No. 228/2021, including those concerning the application of environmental labeling obligations for packaging set forth by art. 219, paragraph 5, of Legislative Decree No. 159/2006, which, if approved by the Senate, would be further suspended until 31 December 2022 (currently the suspension applies until 30 June 2022). The bill also amends the term for the disposal of stocks of non-conforming packaging by providing those products with no environmental labeling already placed on the market or labeled on 1 January 2023 (instead of 1 July 2022) can be marketed until their stocks are exhausted.
Lastly, the bill provides for the postponement of the deadline for the Ministry of the Environmental Transition to adopt the technical guidelines for the environmental labeling, which should now occur within 90 days from the entry into force of the conversion law.
